What is a Sea or
Burial at sea?
One Burial at sea is the burial of the urn in the Baltic Sea or North Sea. Although both are also seas, they are Burial at sea explicitly for burial in a different body of water (e.g. Atlantic or Mediterranean). Regardless of which form of burial you or your loved ones choose, the first step in both is cremation. The ashes are placed in a water-soluble urn and are ready to be transferred to a ship that sails at half-mast. The destination: the final resting place on the water. As the next of kin, you have the choice between a silent burial, in which you do not take part yourself, or a ceremony on board. In this way, the remains of a loved one will find comfort and peace in the vastness of the seas.
How does a Sea and
Burial at sea off?
If you decide against a silent burial, the burial at sea will begin in the harbour of your choice. The burial at sea takes place in a dignified manner according to nautical custom within the framework of legal regulations. The urn is laid out on the ship. The captain welcomes the mourners. When all the guests are on board, the ship sets sail and heads for a specially designated spot at sea. Once there, the mourners and the captain gather on the upper deck. After the funeral speeches, the urn is lowered into the water by the captain. This is the final farewell. To symbolise the urn's departure from the ship, the captain rings eight glasses of the ship's bell. After the ship's horn sounds, the half-mast flagged ship draws a circle around the burial site as a sign of honour. The grave at sea has no visible signs, only geographical coordinates. From time to time, some surviving relatives take the opportunity to travel there again by ship for a silent memorial. As a rule, you will receive an extract from the ship's logbook for a burial at sea. The coordinates of the burial at sea are marked on a small map.
